Session II: Week 5 Recap!

Laguna Beach Night Trip

On Thursday of Week 5, our students enjoyed the last free trip of the summer: the Laguna Beach Night Trip! They were able to ride the trolley, visit Laguna Beach’s best kept secret spots, eat at international restaurants, and see the Art Walk which happens every first Thursday of the month at Laguna Beach.

Hollywood Tour

Over the weekend, some of our students took a break from studying for their finals by going to Hollywood, Griffith Park and Downtown LA before making their way to the Citadel Outlets on this day of fun in LA! They visited many famous Hollywood landmarks, including the renowned Hollywood Walk of Fame and Grauman’s Chinese Theater. They enjoyed the Griffith Observatory, one of Southern California’s most popular attractions. At Downtown LA, they went to the Grand Central Market, a downtown landmark since 1917, bringing together the cuisines and cultures of Los Angeles!

We hope all of our students had a great time during their stay at UCI. We hope you all had a safe trip back home and we wish you luck in your future endeavors!

The stereotype of the “librarian” is the cardigan-wearing, bun-headed woman who loves books, cats, and QUIET. But… what do librarians REALLY do? Did you know that all librarians at UCI have at least one Master’s Degree, if not two, and/or a PhD? Did you know librarians are research detectives who regularly assist faculty but who can also help you get ahead with your studies? Or that librarians are involved with making online information findable, accessible, and if possible, free? Or that we are engaged with making and recording history in our communities? In this session, you’ll hear from a diverse panel of librarians about their careers and their often unexpected paths to the UCI Libraries, while learning about the complex, exciting, and not-well-known profession of academic librarianship.

Moderator: Stacy Brinkman, Head of Education and Outreach at Langson Library
Panelists: Nicole Arnold, MA, MLIS – Research Librarian for Student Success and Education
Loren Valterza, PhD, MLIS – Reference and Instruction Librarian
Krystal Tribbett, PhD – Curator for Orange County Regional History
Thuy Vo Dang, PhD – Curator for the Southeast Asian Archive
